Time-lapse: Stream restoration at University of Richmond weathers first storm
The first spring storm brought heavy rainfall to the Little Westham Creek restoration site at the University of Richmond, with the watershed receiving between 0.75 and 1.4 inches of rain. This storm served as an early test for the ongoing restoration project—and the results were a resounding success.
The restored stream handled the storm flows exactly as designed, with water spreading across the floodplain to depths of up to 18 inches and a width of 40 feet. The system effectively mitigated the storm’s impact, with only minimal damage observed on the floodplain.
This performance marks an important milestone in the project, showcasing the benefits of thoughtful stream restoration for managing stormwater and protecting ecosystems. Little Westham Creek is already proving to be a model for sustainable watershed management and ecological resilience.
