Amphibian explosion: Wildlife responses to wetland restoration
A primary focus of the restoration of the Bois d’Arc Lake Mitigation project in Texas was on creating macro depressions and shallow ponded areas, which serve as crucial habitats for amphibians. These environments are essential for the amphibians' life cycle, providing the necessary water for breeding and growth, while also creating a fish-free zone to protect eggs and larvae.
As a direct consequence, we've witnessed a surge in the population of various species that rely on amphibians as a food source. Birds, mammals, and reptiles, including snakes, herons, and egrets, are thriving as they feed on the abundant amphibian population. The overall impact on the ecosystem is significant, as these habitats not only support amphibians but also provide an array of food sources for a variety of wildlife, from snails and worms to dragonfly larvae.
