Saving trees at the Wancopin stream restoration
In this episode, we dive into the challenges and considerations surrounding limited disturbance zones in construction projects. The team collaborated closely to identify areas where tree preservation is possible while also accommodating construction needs.
Throughout the project, we focused on maintaining a tight limits of disturbance, or LOD, carefully selecting which trees to work around. Using CAD data, engineers accurately mapped and preserved specimen trees, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding environment. We also explored the importance of selective clearing or topping when trees are located in the direct path of construction, as opposed to a full clear-cut approach.
A key aspect of our strategy was developing a clear set of criteria for each project, such as saving trees above a certain size or preserving specific species. This approach allowed us to map out areas where tree protection is feasible and design around them effectively.
In some instances, like the one shown in the episode, we work meticulously to protect root zones and tree canopies by using deck mats to minimize damage. These efforts highlight our commitment to environmental responsibility while advancing construction goals.
